First movement of the Namup method

Recognise

Know what you have, and make the most of it.

Nothing is built on what you refuse to look at.

It starts with an inventory, and the inventory is shorter than you expect.

The first movement is to name what comes in. For a lot of people that takes a minute: one salary, paid on the same day each month, written down once and known for good. For others the amount moves, and the method answers straight instead of dodging: the line sits on the floor of the last six months, never on the average. The good months are not for spending either. They fill the envelopes.

But recognising reaches further than income. It also means recognising what you already own and leave idle: an account opened for an occasion nobody remembers, a sum that earns nothing, gold in a box nobody has weighed in years, a thing bought and never used. It is an old teaching in many households that nothing put in your hands should be wasted, not so much as a crumb of bread. Money sitting idle is a quiet form of the same neglect.

There are households that say every year they cannot get a plan off the ground, while part of the sum they need is dozing in an account they stopped looking at, or in gold whose weight nobody could tell you today. The money was there. What was missing was the looking.

To recognise, finally, is to admit what genuinely counts, once you stop apologising for existing. A person who earns a decent living has the right to eat, to get around, to dress, to go out, without putting every note on trial. That is not weakness. The method never asks anyone to give up what they love. It asks them to know it, so that it can be protected.

The right word was never discipline. The right word is clarity.

The same household, at this movement

This household recognises 8,000 a month. Two salaries, landing on the same day, written down once and known for good. If either of them moved from month to month, the line would sit on the floor of the last six months instead, and nothing else in the calculation would change.
