Second movement of the Namup method
Honour
Serve your commitments before your comfort.
What is promised is no longer mine, and admitting that is already keeping my word.
Then comes what is no longer yours.
The rent, as certain as sunrise. The bills at the end of the month. The instalment on a car or a laptop. These are not choices to be made again every thirty days, they are commitments already given. You do not postpone them and you do not ignore them, for as long as you want to be trusted.
One line comes back in almost every household living away from where it came from, and almost no tool knows what to do with it: the support sent to parents. It is not a comfort expense and it is not charity. It is the recognition of years of going without. The method treats it exactly as it treats the rent, taken first, never last, never out of what happens to be left. A bond of blood is a promise nobody needed to say out loud for it to bind.
And debt? There is reflex debt, taken on a tired evening and repaid while quietly resenting yourself. That one is never worth advising, because a gap is closed by earning, by saving or by going without, not by borrowing. And there is debt that is weighed, chosen with open eyes, for something that lasts. Carrying ordinary credit is nothing to be ashamed of. It simply belongs in its proper column, among the things that are owed.
You still need to know what a debt truly costs, and this is where almost everyone is caught. The lender speaks in percentages. Four percent: the number is small, it reassures, it sounds like a formality. A percentage is not a price. It is an annual rate applied to what you still owe, and nobody volunteers the total.
Do the arithmetic once and you will not forget it, and it holds in whatever currency you borrow in. Seven hundred thousand over twenty years at four percent is repaid at about one million and eighteen thousand. That is three hundred and eighteen thousand in interest, forty five percent of the amount borrowed, paid to someone who sold you nothing. A personal loan runs higher still: sixty thousand at fifteen percent over five years, which is the top of what gets quoted rather than the middle of it, is repaid at eighty five thousand six hundred, twenty five thousand six hundred of it interest, forty three percent of the sum, for a wedding or a term of fees that is over and has left nothing you could sell.
The percentage misleads twice over where a loan is quoted flat, meaning the rate is applied every year to the whole sum you borrowed rather than to the part you still owe. Two offers can print the same figure on the page and cost very different amounts of money, and nothing in the printed figure tells you which is which.
Hence a rule, and it is handed over the way you hand someone a tool. Never compare percentages. Ask for the total cost in money over the whole term, and compare those amounts. An honest lender gives it without blinking. If you are told that this is not the right way to look at it, you have just learned something about the person across the desk.

Of those 8,000, some 4,500 is no longer its own. The rent comes first, asked for the whole year and spread across twelve months here rather than in anyone's head. Then 400 on a car financed at a fixed margin, known in advance and unchanging. Then 560 sent to parents, taken at the same rank as the rent and never out of what happens to be left.
